Discs do not slip because they are attached firmly to the vertebral bodies above and below the discs. There is a gelatinous fluid within the fibrous outer coating of the disc and if the disc is subjected to extreme force and distortion due to inappropriate lifting this fibrous coating of the disc can herniate (bubble out) like can happen on the wall of a car tyre. This in turn can place pressure on the nearby associated spinal nerve root which in turn will give rise to pain in the leg.
